OUR CAPABILITIES

Fuels Testing

Background
Recent high prices of natural gas have sparked significant interest in other fuels, including the following:

  • Anaerobic Digester Gas
  • Biomass Gas
  • Blast Furnace Gas
  • Coalbed Methane
  • Coke-oven Gas
  • Landfill Gas
  • Wellhead Gas
  • Tire-Derived Fuel

These fuels, although not traditionally not used for power generation, have the potential to be economically viable for such use and are often called opportunity fuels. These fuels, though available at low or "no cost," have qualities (heating value and contaminants, etc.) significantly different from those of natural gas.

Focus
The focus of our work in this area is on testing the effects of using various opportunity fuels on the performance of various power generation technologies.

Recently, wok has been initiated on researching fuel-related issues and determining the performance of a single-cylinder reciprocating engine for a number of opportunity fuels.
